Philippa Lowthorpe has taken the directorial reins from Marc Munden. But even the nature of that creepiness has changed. Now everything is cold and gray. A succession of locals, even the jolly Mr. In fact, before Mrs. But Helen has good reason to mistrust the kindness of strangers, as we learn in that relatively predictable twist at the end.
I guessed it way back during the pilot episode; how about you? Like him, she suffered through the abduction and apparent murder of their son. One thing that is clear? The Third Day has not missed a step despite the creative changeover. The causeway is still an evocative visual signature for the show. The Martins remain maddening and menacing despite their surface friendliness and their ability to explain away every weird thing that happens—your missing car?
Stolen, not towed! The screaming woman? The abandoned house with a fully equipped operating theater? The frightening iconography you see everywhere you look? Just laying down my marker, is all.
Director Lowthorpe and cinematographer Chizallet have settled on a much more muted palette than Munden and Kracun before them. It makes her reactions in life-or-death situations seem that much more life-or-death. And most heartbreakingly, it reveals how the children have come to be the caretakers for their own parent, who suffers from panic attacks they need to hug her through. These will be compelling dynamics to work with in the two episodes that remain.
And you can add them to the already fascinating and frightening mysteries of Osea, the fates of Sam and Jess, and the open question of whether Helen will have any more luck escaping than her husband did.

Is she literally going to break him out? Given the unrealistic ease with which she wheeled him to the tub room for a rub and tug from Dolly, that would probably be easy, but it seems unlikely. Does she think she can cure him? A stronger version of this show would make the stakes and plans of its protagonist more defined. Maybe Mildred Ratched is just figuring out her plan as she deals with the roadblocks in front of her one at a time.
The writers seem to be figuring her out that way too. The two have more kinky sex, but this time Briggs listens through the door at the motel after leaving her sham marriage. Before then, Briggs tells Ratched something important: The governor will defund the hospital if Edmund is deemed unfit to stand trial. To be fair, Ratched lives up to its gross-out potential in this episode after Wainwright is boiled alive in the hydrotherapy tub.
He somehow breaks out of the tub before dying and shambles down the hall, his skin practically falling off. This show has used monster-movie visual language before and should do it moreand he looks like something out of a classic Hammer flick. He ends up being shot in the face twice by a guard, and his body is burned in the basement of Lucia. Rough way to go. Does she now know too much to make it through the next four episodes? Maybe Ratched suspects she needs to learn exactly what Briggs saw, because she invites her out on another date down the shore, ostensibly to celebrate leaving her husband.
Or maybe Ratched helping two women find happiness together has allowed her to embrace her own sexuality? Only time will tell. To who else will she prescribe her mercy?Ep. 2: Life on Other Planets - Raised By Wolves: The Podcast - HBO Max
Is she just comic relief? The leech scene is pretty wonderful, though. I hope Murphy puts him in another project. Random choice or thematic? He was huffing last episode and injecting this one.
